  • Couple scams Amazon out of $1.2M with phony missing or damaged claims

This Couple Scammed Amazon Out of $1.2 Million. Now They Have to Pay It Back

This couple was caught because they took it too far. Using multiple false accounts and identities they repeatedly claimed nonreceipt, or damaged receipt of goods, all the while selling the goods through a third party "fence."

They sold the goods for about fifty cents on the dollar, and now must repay all of the money and serve federal prison time.

It looks like in this case they targeted Amazon themselves rather than the Marketplace sellers; had they targeted the private sellers on Amazon I'm certain they'd still be operating today, like many others currently are. The worst Amazon does is close accounts that have five or more of these claims. I've had several buyers like this, and it may surprise you but I find this happens far more often on Amazon than eBay.
