Today any crime considered an aggravated felony (which means for the most part any drug sales conviction, any theft crime resulting in a sentence of one year or more, any fraud conviction resulting in a loss of more than $10,000., and most any sex crime conviction), results in mandatory removal.

However there are a myriad of defenses available for older (pre 1996) convictions, as well as newer convictions that are not aggravated felonies.
