Buyer opened a dispute and still has the product - PayPal may reverse payment

I sold a product to someone whom i met with at a local place of interest. This was after he had sent me $640 via paypal. I come home from that to find that paypal has opened a dispute because they are reviewing his account. I called and they said it is very possible that the $640 will be returned to him. How is this possible that he will now keep the product and the money?

There are a lot of details you leave out, such as if you shipped the product or just handed it to him, and if you shipped, whether you shipped with signature confirmation.
