The latest rage are free basic (no internet, but yes pretty much unlimited calls and texts) cell phones for low income people. If you receive some kind of assisted phone service (such as Lifeline), or are on government assisted general relief such as welfare or food stamps, or receive government subsidized or free medical insurance, you can get a free cell phone.
And, if you KNOW someone like the above, it might be worth it to you to pay that person to get you a free phone.
