Authorize.net is pretty old school by now and a very standard payment gateway.
What that means - a payment gateway - is that at the same time you are approved for authorize.net you also choose an actual credit card processor which is used to process the payments. A payment gateway like authorize.net is the go between for payments and processing, such as via buttons on your website and so on.
I recommend using cartmanager as the go between, and then a processor like Google Checkout, which is much easier to be approved for than merchantinc, unless of course you are in a country where you may not be approved for Google Checkout. But still, as a way to integrate payments with your processor I recommend cartmanager.
The answer is a little more complicated than this because Cartmanager’s shopping cart is only setup to integrate with real-time gateways. It is the real-time payment gateways that then integrate on their back end with the different processors. If the payment processor has any of the gateways listed here:
then cartmanager should still be able to work with them through that gateway. (For example you will note that authorize.net is compatible with cartmanager.)
Merchantinc is another payment processor.
So actually, you would need both authorize.net and merchantinc depending on your application or you would need authorize.net and another payment processor. And you would still need something like cartmanager to integrate with your websites.
BUT when you get approved for a merchant account, you will also be approved for whatever payment gateway that processor uses, which may well be authorize.net
To get more into this topic for your specific application, suggest tech support, because by asking a question about whether a payment gateway and a credit card processor is better, it shows that you're not clear on what they are, or what you NEED.
You also need to consider what country you are in. Some countries - it is almost impossible to get approved for any mainstream credit card processor, unless you package your application properly.
