There is no universal rule, but of course, avoid busy backgrounds, or anything like furniture or the kitchen sink in the background. Just look on the web and see how Madison Avenue showcases its goods, and follow their example as best you can. A good dark background, a marble table, or a wood floor, works fine.
I use professional cameras, but really anything that is better than a cell phone camera will do if you know what you are doing. Of course your pictures will look better with a better camera and lens, but they won't look bad with any decent camera if your lighting is good. And then photoshop to reduce to the acceptable size for Ebay, and post either directly or via something like ImageShack.
