On your credit profiles, accounts that were closed at credit grantor's request count against you - those closed at consumer's request do not.
So, if you get into a situation where your card is about to be closed, such as say, a financial review is being done (by, say American Express), and you are unable or unwilling to cough up the verification documents, CANCEL the account before the card grantor does. And then, FOLLOW UP with your credit bureaus to make certain that all of them indicate that your account was closed "at consumer's request."
There are even ways to make your credit accounts ALL show as "closed at consumer's request" - even if you were cancelled! Contact me for tech support details on how to make that happen.
